What Is Actually Inside a Pokémon Elite Trainer Box?

Last updated:

A current Pokémon elite trainer box contains nine booster packs, one full-art foil promo card, 65 card sleeves, 40 to 45 Basic Energy cards, a player's guide, dice, condition markers, card dividers and a Pokémon TCG Live code card — all inside a rigid box with a moulded tray. That is the whole list, and it has been broadly stable since the Scarlet & Violet era began in 2023.

What changes between sets is the artwork, the promo, and a handful of small components. Below is what each item is, whether it is worth anything, and where the era differences bite.

The verified contents, item by item

Two officially documented examples, three years apart, show both the standard and the drift:

Item Paldea Evolved ETB (June 2023) Mega Evolution—Pitch Black ETB (July 2026)
Booster packs 9 9
Foil promo card 1 (Pikachu) 1 (Zarude)
Card sleeves 65 65
Basic Energy 45 40
Player's guide Yes Yes
Damage-counter dice 6 6
Competition-legal coin-flip die 1 1
Condition markers 2 plastic markers 1 plastic coin
Card dividers 4 6
Code card 1 1

Energy count dropped from 45 to 40, dividers went from four to six, and the pair of condition markers was replaced by a single plastic coin. None of that is dramatic, but if you are buying an older elite trainer box for the supplies, check the box copy rather than assuming.

The packs

Nine packs is the Scarlet & Violet era standard. Sword & Shield era boxes held eight — Silver Tempest, for instance, was an eight-pack box with no promo card. Pokémon Center exclusive versions hold eleven packs and two promos.

Each pack contains ten cards, one Basic Energy and one code card. In the Scarlet & Violet era the ten-card layout breaks down as four Commons, three Uncommons, one slot that is a reverse holo or Shiny Rare or ACE SPEC, one slot that is a reverse holo or Illustration Rare or Special Illustration Rare or Hyper Rare, and one slot that is a Rare, Double Rare or Ultra Rare. Since the Scarlet & Violet expansion, every Rare that appears in a booster pack is a holofoil Rare — the plain non-holo Rare no longer exists in packs.

If you only want the packs and none of the rest, we sell loose packs separately.

The promo card

This one is worth getting right, because the internet has it backwards.

Sword & Shield main-set elite trainer boxes did not include a promo. From the Scarlet & Violet base set onward, every elite trainer box has included one full-art foil promo card. The Scarlet & Violet base box carried a Koraidon or Miraidon promo; the 151 box carried Snorlax; the Mega Evolution box carried a Riolu or Alakazam promo.

These are genuine Black Star Promos with their own promo numbers, not reprints of set cards. They are only obtainable in the product they shipped in, which is why the promo is often the piece of an elite trainer box that people specifically want. The 65 sleeves

Sixty-five is not arbitrary. A Pokémon deck is sixty cards, and the extra five cover damage and replacements. They are printed with set artwork and they are perfectly serviceable for play.

They are not, however, what you want for long-term storage of a valuable card. Set-art sleeves are opaque on the back and vary in tolerance batch to batch. For anything you care about, use a proper penny sleeve and a rigid holder — our storage guide covers the order of operations.

Energy, dice, markers and dividers

The loose Basic Energy is genuinely useful and genuinely dull. Energy cards are the one part of a deck you always need more of and never want to buy.

The six damage-counter dice track damage during a game. The separate coin-flip die is the one that matters at events: it is described as competition-legal, meaning it is an acceptable randomiser for sanctioned play, which a printed cardboard coin from a theme deck is not always. The condition markers (or the plastic coin, in newer boxes) mark Poisoned, Burned and similar statuses.

The card dividers slot into the box to separate your deck from your spares. Four or six of them, depending on era.

The code card

Every booster pack contains one code card, and the elite trainer box adds one for the box itself in most configurations. Codes redeem inside Pokémon TCG Live, which replaced Pokémon TCG Online — the old servers closed on 5 June 2023 and Live launched on 8 June 2023. Old PTCGO-branded codes still redeem in Live.

Worth knowing: a booster code gives you a digital pack from the same expansion, but not the same cards you pulled physically. There is no link between the two.

The box itself

The rigid box with its moulded tray is the most underrated item in the product. It holds a sleeved deck plus dice and markers, it survives being carried around, and it stacks. A great many players use them as their permanent deck boxes and never buy anything else.

It is not an archival storage solution. Cardboard breathes, and a box sitting on a radiator or in a garage will move moisture into your cards.

What is not in the box

To save you looking: no playmat, no deck box beyond the outer box itself, no metal card, no oversize jumbo card, no binder. Those appear in Premium Collections and Ultra-Premium Collections instead — the 151 Ultra-Premium Collection, for example, shipped with 16 packs, two promos, an etched metal Mew ex, a playmat and a deck box.

If the accessories are the point of the purchase for you, the elite trainer box is the wrong tier. Have a look at what we stock in elite trainer boxes alongside the rest of our sealed range before you decide.

Frequently asked questions

Does every Pokémon elite trainer box come with a promo card?

Not historically. Sword & Shield main-set elite trainer boxes did not include one. Every elite trainer box from the Scarlet & Violet base set onward has included one full-art foil promo, and Pokémon Center versions include two.

How many sleeves are in an elite trainer box, and are they good?

Sixty-five, which covers a sixty-card deck with five spare. They are fine for play. For storing a card you care about, use penny sleeves and a rigid holder instead.

What do I do with the code cards?

Redeem them in Pokémon TCG Live, which replaced Pokémon TCG Online in June 2023. A booster code gives you a digital pack from the same expansion, but it will not contain the same cards you pulled from the physical pack.

Is the elite trainer box good for storing my collection?

It is good for storing a deck. It is not archival storage. The box is cardboard, it breathes, and it will not protect cards from humidity or temperature swings over years.

How many cards are in each pack inside the box?

Ten cards, plus one Basic Energy and one code card. Boosters have held ten game cards since the Diamond & Pearl era, and international packs have carried the extra Basic Energy since Sun & Moon.
