Playmats — rubber-backed mats that give you a clean, slightly cushioned surface to play on.
They are not only cosmetic. A mat lets you pick a sleeved card up off the table without scraping it along a hard surface, and it keeps cards out of whatever is on the table underneath. At most sanctioned events a mat is expected rather than optional.
Standard size is roughly 24 by 14 inches, enough for one player's full board. Playmats also roll up and travel well, which is why most regulars own more than one.
