Sleeves are the cheapest insurance in the hobby. A Near Mint card stays Near Mint in a sleeve and does not once it has been shuffled bare a few dozen times. For anything you intend to play with or resell, sleeving is not optional.
Standard size fits Pokémon, Magic, One Piece, Yu-Gi-Oh and most modern games. Japanese size is smaller and fits Japanese-print Pokémon and Yu-Gi-Oh. Perfect fit sleeves go on first, inside an outer sleeve, for double protection on valuable cards.
