Toploaders are rated in points, which measures card thickness: 35pt suits a standard card, 55pt to 75pt for thicker or relic cards, 130pt+ for patch cards. Putting a card in a toploader that is too large lets it rattle, which does more damage than no toploader at all.
For bulk, a row box plus dividers beats anything else for cost per card. For anything genuinely valuable, a one-touch magnetic holder is the step up from a toploader.
